Straight, Angular Lines are So Powerful in Art!

Ultimately, we want our designs to contain beauty and meaning. This is not easily done, because there is so much to consider. And since *lines* is one of the elements of design, we never want to overlook how lines can enhance or detract from our work.

Most importantly, lines can improve the tone and quality of designs. In the way we use lines, we can bring our own unique, yet different signatures into our artistic expressions. In nature and in most designs, we see a variety of lines that range from short to long, thick to thin, smooth to jagged, and curved to straight. Straight, angular lines bring structure, strength, and stability to designs, while curved lines can generate movement and grace.

How do lines bring meaning when the shapes are abstract? What beauty or meaning do lines bring to you as you study a piece of art? There are no right or wrong answers to this, and I have to say, I'm not completely sure myself--even if I designed it! But hopefully, you will agree with me when I express, if straight, angular lines were all an artist had chosen to use, would the design be as interesting or playful than if the lines were mixed with curvy lines too?

As we continue to raise our awareness for the creative arts, we need to remember the importance of lines and be mindful of how lines are used in nature. For instance, some varieties of palm trees have leaves with straight folds in them, yet the shapes of the leaves are circular. Also, notice how the body styles of motor vehicles are designed, if the lines are too straight, the lines are not as pleasing to our eyes. Even landscapes are more appealing when curves are incorporated. Indeed, lines are one of the elements of design; and we need to be cautious in how we use them!
